I have been photographing the annual fashion show at Cornell University for 9 years now. I’m starting to consider whether next year (my 10th) should be my last.
Whether it is or not, I will be approaching the College of Human Ecology about putting together a retrospective of photos covering that 10-year period, and possibly making it available as a book published by the Cornell University Press.
But I’m getting ahead of myself!
Many of the 9 years I’ve been taking photos of the show (including the very first one), I start by photographing the models and designers getting ready back stage before the show. I then shift over to the runway in time to photograph the show.
One of the years, I stayed back stage while a fellow photographer photographed the show. It was interesting seeing what goes on back stage *during* the show and to capture it photographically.
Anyway, I have always liked taking photos of the unstaged activities going on before the show. While the show itself can be quite visually spectacular, it’s less compelling from a human interest perspective. What happens back stage before the show is full of emotions and idiosyncrasies.
So here I present a selection of photos I took before the 2014 fashion show in chronological order, ending with two shots from the subsequent show.
(You’ll probably notice that the photos get darker and darker. This is due to both the available natural light becoming less and less as the sun set, and the dimming of the interior lights as the show draws closer. It gets so dark back there, that a primarily available light photographer like myself has practically no option but to seek out the various small lights designers are using–including things like cell phones–and taking whatever shots they make possible.)

(BTW, if you’re interested, here are the runway show photos.)

Last June (2013), I finally photographed a short series I had first envisioned the previous Winter. We tried to shoot it in late March, but the model came down with a bad cold. Instead of shooting during that chilly day in March, I fleshed out the concept of the shoot a bit more.
When we finally photographed the series, we hit ten locations in two hours. I wanted to call this a “photography sprint” because: a) it described the quickness of covering 10 locations in a short period of time, and b) I liked the combination of “sprint” with “little red corset”, the latter being a play on a fast sports car (i.e., “little red corvette”).
However, I worried that this all made the title too long and was too much about the process…?
Here’s what it was supposed to be:
Little Red Corset Photography Sprint:
Navigating a Corporate Landscape
Of course “navigating” at least hints at travel and may be sufficient by itself.
I’ve got plans to print these large because they were taken outside with a wide angle lens and were always meant to place the model within an expansive scene. I think printing them large would best present them with the full impact the images were meant to have. The cost to print and mount these as 30″x45″ prints is pretty expensive; so I may have to do a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign to make it happen.
Anyway, here’s a video of the likely final shots I want to print:

Last August (2013), I had the opportunity to attend a fashion show put on by one of my favorite local designers: Rachael Reichert. Not only does she design awesome sexy women’s clothes, but she also writes and directs videos featuring her models (wearing her clothes, of course) involved in fascinating futuristic story lines!
It was the most interesting fashion show I’ve ever attended and I want to thank Rachael for letting me come and photograph the show and also behind-the-scenes before the show…:).

For the past 6 or 7 years, I’ve been photographing the fashion show at Cornell University. It’s always in the Spring and it’s always a good warm-up for the busy late Spring and Summer photography seasons.
This year, I did some photography both back stage and also photographed the entire show itself.
In this post, I’ll be featuring some of those back stage photos–which I truly enjoy taking; they’re totally candid/unstaged and give one a view of the event that you don’t normally see as a fashion show audience member. (I mixed in just a couple show photos for good measure.)
I’ll be adding to the gallery over the next few weeks, but here’s a start!
