I just noticed it’s been a couple of years since my “infamous” Underwear at 50 photo shoot! Sometimes I take a glance back at the photos and usually I decide there are lots I don’t like. I just noticed this one that I kinda liked this time around (click it to see it against a dark background):
It’s got a different “feel” to it than the one I posted originally from this particular shot location.
Maybe it’s because I didn’t think this one was “comical” enough? I’m not sure.
It’s pretty common for me to go back to sets of photos I took in the past with “fresh eyes” and see photos I like that I didn’t like the first or even second time around. Strange phenomenon…:p

I decided it might be fun to walk around and take photos on the grounds at the Daytona 500 Speedway during the week leading up to the big race.
As I wandered about, I noticed one alcoholic beverage company had a particularly *strong* presence there.
A naive person might think it strange that an alcoholic drink would have a strong association with an event where people are driving cars at speeds averaging over 140 mph.
But see, it’s not the drivers drinking the beer; it’s the fans in stands! Got that (silly you/me)?
Nope. See, the drivers don’t drink until after the race…and then they only drink champagne, and from a cartoonishly large bottle referred to as a “Double Magnum”, an “Imperial”, or “Mama’s Hollow Leg”*.
I just figure that drinking beer is a really good way to make watching cars go around and around a track 300 times (or whatever) really entertaining.
In any case, click on the images below to witness the King of Beers®’ presence at the Daytona 500 in life-like fidelity…
*(OK, I made that last one up. However, on a totally unrelated note: have you ever seen the Free Dictionary’s definition of Hiney? ->”Either of the two rounded prominences on the human torso that are posterior to the hips and formed by the gluteal muscles and underlying structures.” That makes me chuckle more even than actually uttering the word “hiney”..)

I was going through boxes of my old things tonight and happened upon an article I got published back in March of 1989 in a magazine called ComputorEdge (based in San Diego and still going strong online).
It was supposed to be a humorous geek-like article, and I think I at least succeeded in the latter…:p. (By the way, you may notice it’s published under my old last name: “Wich”; also, get a load of the “floppy disks”–oh, memories…)
Here’s a scan of it:

There are few things more capricious or idiosyncratic than a person’s sense of humor. Not only does sense of humor vary across individuals, it also varies for any particular person depending on their mood and circumstances over time.
Capturing a photograph that *everyone* thinks is funny isn’t going to happen. However, some photos will tend to make a greater number of people laugh. Then again, some of the more subtle or “dryer” photos that make fewer laugh overall, may be a greater pleasure to those “fewer” who do find it humorous.
Humor in photography is obviously a tricky thing and difficult to score big with, short of producing obvious or gross visual “caricatures”.
For those who pursue humor photography from the creation end, however, it can be a distinct and intrinsic (self-evident) pleasure…:).

Everyday Glam
(photos by Michael Grace-Martin)
The best I can tell, “glamour” is some blend of fashion and sex appeal. The amount of clothing involved can be very little (e.g., skimpy lingerie) or even nothing, or offer fairly comprehensive body coverage, as long as it does so in a sexually provocative manner. In all cases, glamour seems aimed at going beyond the “everyday” in a sexy and captivating direction.
Usually, glamour is associated with beautifully dressed people, striking dramatic and sexy poses in special circumstances, like fashion shoots, fashion shows, celebrity events, or fancy balls to name a few.
But what if glamour were combined with everyday tasks and events, like taking the garbage can to the curb or sweeping the kitchen floor? What if it wasn’t just for exclusive occasions when people are getting together to hobnob with others all trying to look their sexy best?
What you would have, my friends, is Everyday Glam: Glamour as an antidote to everyday life.
